Post-Secondary Education

Post Secondary EdContinuing a post-secondary education (college or university) generally requires a high school diploma. Tuition fees for the publicly-funded post-secondary education system in Newfoundland and Labrador are among the lowest in Canada. University degrees can be pursued at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's or Grenfell College in Corner Brook. You can prepare for a career in the marine industry at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. John's. Arts and trades careers begin at one of 17 College of the North Atlantic (CNA) campuses, or at one of the numerous private colleges in the province. Financial assistance is available to permanent residents through the Canada Student Loan Program and the Newfoundland and Labrador Student Loan Program.

Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador

Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada, offering more than 100 degree programs to a student population of 17,000. Students can expand their horizons at one of two campuses in St. John's, including the Marine Institute, one in Corner Brook and one in Harlow, England.

Post Secondary Edmi 263X176The Marine Institute (MI) is Canada's leading centre of fisheries and marine training.  It is part of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and offers bachelors and masters degrees, one-year advanced diplomas, two-year and three-year diplomas and certificate programs.  MI is divided into three schools: the School of Fisheries; the School of Maritime Studies; and the School of Ocean Technology.

The university's international student body is increasing and there are currently over 1000 international students enrolled.

College of the North Atlantic

Post Secondary Ed ConaCollege of the North Atlantic (CNA) is one of the largest post-secondary educational and skills training centres in Atlantic Canada, with a history dating back more than 40 years. They have 17 campus locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and one in the Middle East State of Qatar. CNA has nearly 100 full-time program offerings and more than 300 part-time courses.
